Thailand has depleted much of its own timber, minerals and fish and is unable to meet its gas and petroleum demands through domestic production. Beginning with the government of Chatichai Choonahavan, this country has sought increasingly to improve relations with Indochina and Myanmar. This policy has been motivated predominantly by economic considerations, in particular access to natural resources. The authors explore the fisheries and offshore hydrocarbon sectors in the context of Thailand's resource diplomacy. (DÜI-Sen)

Are there connections between the structures of political systems and types of scientific advice to policymak - ing? This volume unites case studies from the Netherlands, France, the European Union and the USA that provide an overview of different institutional arrangements, focusing on issues such as the independence and balance of advice. Common to all is the question which forms of advice can increase the rationality of policymaking without loss of political legitimacy.
